What used to
be a simple plot of land located in the outskirts of Fredonia
along KS-47 in 1997 is now a bustling center of commerce,
comprising 50 acres of land devoted to a Conoco gasoline
station, a convenience store, a restaurant and a hotel.
It took a visionary in the person of Andrea Bacani, the
enterprising wife of noted doctor of medicine, Dr. Oswaldo
Bacani, both of Filipino origin, to transform this once idle and
sleepy piece of property into a busy and thriving commercial
center that has become a landmark in the small city of Fredonia.
Woman's intuition, industry and a strong will to make things
happen combined to encourage Mrs. Bacani to acquire this fifty
acre lot at the edge of Fredonia along KS-47 and throw her lot
on what to her was a promising piece of real estate.
Providence was on her side as not too long after she purchased
the property, news came out about the US-400 corridor that would
be built along the other side of the property, making the corner
of her property a major junction that would capture the flow of
vehicles from four directions. In 1998, her property was
rezoned and re-classified as a commercial lot and was annexed to
the City of Fredonia. This signaled the start of a flurry
of activities that would eventually result in the establishment
of a business center that is now BACANI PLAZA, a realization of
Mrs. Bacani's dream.
In 2001, Mrs. Andrea Bacani's company was the recipient of the
Kansas Minority-owned Reatailer Award. Her gasoline
station was also named the Top One Per Cent Convenience Store
League of CONOCO for its outstanding and excellent performance.
